Living in a skoolie doesn’t mean owning less — it means owning better.
After five years of full-time bus life with kids, pets, travel days, and everyday routines; these skoolie must-haves are the items that have truly earned their place in our home.

This is not an aspirational list.
This is not a “nice to have” roundup.

These are the things we use constantly — the tools, systems, and comforts that make skoolie life easier, more comfortable, and actually sustainable in the long term. Because, to be quite honest, these are the items that can make or break your experience of living tiny on the road.

If you’re building, downsizing, or refining your setup, this is the skoolie must-have list I’d start with.

The 20 Skoolie Essentials We Actually Use

1. MoonShade (Our #1 Outdoor Essential)

If we could only keep one outdoor item, this would be it. The MoonShade creates usable shade no matter how we’re parked and instantly turns any campsite into a real living space. It’s durable, easy to set up and take down, and compactly stores away. It’s one of the few items we use at almost every stop — which is why it’s earned a permanent place in our setup.

2. Portable Blackstone-Style Griddle (Camping Version)

Outdoor cooking is a game-changer in bus life. It keeps heat and food smells out of the bus, and doesn’t touch our solar at all. We chose the camping version because it fits compactly in our storage bay and has a lockable lid for easy transport. Additionally, it cooks incredibly well, reduces dishes, cleans up fast, and is one of those items we’re genuinely glad we made room for.

3. Camp Chairs We Actually Sit In

These aren’t just “camping chairs” — they’re our outdoor living room. We use them daily, which is why they’ve earned a spot on our must-have list. We have two styles we love for different reasons: adjustable reclining chairs that let us put our feet up and include a built-in tray for drinks or phones, and lightweight chairs that fold down small and are easy to store. Both are comfortable for adults and durable enough for everyday use. However, if you have the space, the reclining chairs are hard to beat for comfort and functionality.

4. Adjustable Folding Table

This table does it all. We use it as a coffee table most days, but the adjustable legs let it turn into a full-height table whenever we need it. Also, because it stores easily inside the bus and gets used constantly, it makes the perfect multifunctional table. Whether that’s as our outdoor dining table, a play table for the kids, a coffee table in the morning, or a functional workspace when we take work outside, it works for everything. Simple, versatile, and genuinely useful in a tiny setup.

5. Oversized Outdoor Rug

This rug is what pulls our whole outdoor setup together. It defines the space, dramatically reduces dirt from outside, and its larger size makes it more functional for everyone. In addition, beyond the practical side, it’s what makes the area usable. It provides a clean place for the kids to play, a comfortable spot for the dog to lie without getting covered in sand or dirt, and a space that feels intentional rather than like we’re roughing it. Finally, it’s easy to clean, holds up well, and genuinely makes our outdoor living area feel like home.

6. Solar String Lights

Instant ambience with zero power draw. These aren’t a necessity — but they’re one of those small touches that make the bus feel warm, cozy, and intentional, which is why they make the list of skoolie must-haves. Beyond the vibe, the soft lighting keeps our outdoor space usable well past sunset, giving us more room to spread out in the evenings instead of retreating inside as soon as the sun goes down.

7. Outdoor Hooks + Heavy-Duty Clips

Keeps sandy, wet, and dirty gear outside where it belongs. Outdoor hooks paired with marine-grade clips give everything a designated place to dry. Therefore all outdoor items such as towels, swimsuits, wetsuits, and gear all have a place to hang — without falling, blowing away, or ending up back in the dirt. It’s a simple system that keeps the bus cleaner and makes drying gear fast and effortless.

8. Dedicated Outdoor Towels

One simple system that keeps our shower towels clean. We keep a separate set of quick-dry towels specifically for beach days, lake days, and outdoor use, so our indoor towels always stay clean. I love this brand of towels because they dry fast and fold up compactly. Therefore, the combination and having a second set of outdoor towels make it easy to keep wet, sandy towels from ever coming inside the bus.

9. Zippered Bedding (Custom or Ready-Made)

Makes beds incredibly easy to make in tight spaces and keeps bunks tidy. Zippered bedding completely eliminated daily frustration in our bus. We said goodbye to loose blankets on the floor and wrestling with bedding in awkward spaces. It’s simple enough that the kids can make their own beds, which keeps everything looking neat with minimal effort.

10. Warm LED Puck Lights (Dimmable + Zoned)

Gives us full control over the feel of the bus. We split our dimmable LED puck lights into zones so we can choose exactly which areas are lit at any time. The warm light instantly makes the space feel calm and homey, instead of harsh or sterile. Additionally, being able to dim or isolate lighting makes a huge difference in a tiny space.

11. LED Strip Lights (Bus + Bunks)

Adds soft mood lighting and gives each bunk personal light without disturbing others. We added LED strip lights to each bunk and throughout the main living space so everyone has their own light when they need it. As a result, the adjustable brightness and color make shared spaces calmer at night and give the bus a warm, relaxed feel.

12. Mini Split AC (Cooling System)

One of our biggest build mistakes was thinking we wouldn’t need AC. A mini split removes one major daily stressor: temperature. It keeps the bus comfortable without constantly problem-solving heat, power, or sleep — and that alone makes daily life on the road so much easier.

13. Diesel Heater (Primary Heat Source)

Efficient, reliable heat that keeps the bus comfortable in cold weather. We use diesel heaters as our primary heat source, with one in the front and one in the back of the bus for even warmth. They’re dependable, efficient, and far more practical for heating a skoolie than other options.

14. Instant Pot / Multi-Cooker

Our most-used kitchen appliance. The Instant Pot saves time, power, dishes, and mental energy — especially in a tiny kitchen. We chose this size specifically because it fits our storage space while still handling family meals, which makes it practical for daily use on the road.

15. Safe, reliable towing that makes travel days simple

default

Towing a car behind the bus gives us freedom once we’re parked. The Roadmaster Nighthawk tow bar makes it quick and reliable to hook up and go, which matters when you’re doing it regularly on the road. It’s strong, dependable, and one of those pieces of gear that quietly does its job, so travel days stay simple and stress-free. We traveled for 5 years with no car. However, seeing how easy this tow system has made it to bring a car along on our adventures, I wish we had gotten one sooner.

16. One High-Quality Pan

We use fewer pans — but better ones. Less sticking means less scrubbing, less water, and far less frustration when you’re hand-washing dishes daily. We went with HexClad because they truly perform like nonstick while holding up to constant use. Instead of buying a full cookware set, we chose individual pans based on how and what we actually cook, which saves space and keeps our kitchen simple.

17. Sharp Knives (Fewer, Better)

Fewer knives — better ones. Instead of a full knife block, we use just a few quality knives that handle everything. For years on the road, we used a basic set of three. This year we finally upgraded, and it’s been one of the best kitchen decisions we’ve made. Using fewer knives saves space and dishes, but splurging on quality makes food prep faster, easier, and genuinely more enjoyable. It perfectly reflects our bus-life mantra: quality matters more than quantity.

18. Clear, Uniform Storage Containers

Keeps storage simple and prevents clutter. From OXO pantry containers to clear bins in our storage bays, uniform containers make it easy to see what we have and avoid duplicate purchases. They maximize space, keep things organized, and make daily life in a tiny home feel far more manageable.

👉 Shop storage containers

19. Portable Power Bank / Charger

Fast, reliable charging wherever we are. We’re constantly using our phones for navigation, photos, work, and communication, so having a portable charger we can rely on is essential. It keeps us powered up on travel days, beach days, and anywhere outlets aren’t convenient.

👉 Shop portable chargers

20. Starlink (Why This Lifestyle Works at All)

Starlink is the reason this lifestyle works for us at all. It allows us to live, work, homeschool, and travel full-time, and we’ve used it across 40+ states and multiple countries. We’ve had occasional issues in places with extremely dense tree cover (like the redwoods), but overall it’s been a complete game-changer for staying connected on the road.

Other Skoolie Must-Haves We Use Constantly

These didn’t quite make the Top 20 list of skoolie must-haves, but they’re worth mentioning:

  • Espresso machine (daily ritual and completely non-negotiable)
  • Dyson vacuum (tiny living amplifies mess, and this keeps it manageable)
  • Drone (our most-used tool for capturing life on the road)
  • Alexa (music, movies, timers, and daily rhythms all in one)
  • E-Bikes & paddle boards (freedom once the bus is parked)

These are the kinds of items that don’t always show up on “skoolie must-haves” or tiny-living lists, but they’re woven into how we actually live. Many of them will get their own deep-dive posts soon.

The Skoolie Must-Haves That Earned Their Place

Living tiny forces clarity. When space is limited, everything around you has to work hard and earn its spot. These are the skoolie must-have items that stayed because they’re used constantly, solve real problems, and make daily life on the road easier — not because they’re trendy or labeled as “must-haves,” but because they support the way we actually live. You don’t need everything on this list, but if something here fixes a friction point you’re feeling, it’s probably worth keeping around.

XO,
Morgan
